History

The engine was originally released July 17, 1999. Beta versions of it were made to work on DOS, Linux and Windows platforms, distributed through their website. The engine allows users to insert created characters, background stages, and other game objects through interpreted text files, graphics, and sound compilations to create a functioning fighting game similar to commercial games. While the engine is set up primarily for fighting game development, several other game types have been developed using it, including shooter and platform style games. Officially, Elecbyte claims to have forgotten what the acronym M.U.G.E.N stood for, but the readme documentation states that its meaning referred to the days when the engine was meant to emulate shooting games as opposed to fighting games. Mugen (無限) is also the Japanese word meaning “infinite”.

The development of the DOS version ceased when Elecbyte switched to the Linux platform in November 2001. For a time, Elecbyte had posted a request for donations on their site to legally obtain a Windows compiler to make a Windows version of M.U.G.E.N. However, the development group discontinued the project in 2003 and shut down their site. One version for Windows, WinM.U.G.E.N, circulates on the internet. The website resurfaced in 2007 with a FAQ, though it has not been updated since. Only the software itself is part of Elecbyte’s license, so creations such as characters and stages for use with M.U.G.E.N are covered. Elecbyte itself has not made a public statement since 2003, when they stated that the project had “hit a snag”.

Gameplay


The engine allows for seven buttons for gameplay along with the directional keys, in order to accommodate six-button fighters, four-button fighters, or any other variation. The main mode of play is Arcade mode, where a character fights a set number of random characters. It also has a versus mode that features one on one combat and team combat. The survival mode allows for an endless stream of opponents to be fought with one or two characters until the player is defeated.

Elecbyte created a single character, Kung Fu Man, for the engine. He is a practitioner of karate with hair spiked straight up and closed eyes who wears a gi with a black shirt underneath, blue shoes, and a headband. His movelist serves as a guideline for basic coding techniques in the engine.

Although M.U.G.E.N is a 6 button game engine, you can also set button combinations such as F+A to add more attacks to the character.

Part man, part cop, all zombie… Bryan Fury, an officer in the International Police Organization was killed in a shoot-out in Hong Kong.

Bryan’s corpse was transported to the laboratory of a man named Doctor Abel. This 88-year-old scientist was fairly famous in the underground society, but his findings were often preceded by Doctor Boskonovitch’s. However, at last, he came to the last step of completing his master project… the Cyborg Army. Dr Abel thought that a perfect cyborg must have the mechanics built by his rival, Dr. Boskonovitch, so he reanimated Fury’s body and sent him off to collect this data.

In his former life, Bryan was known as a skillful detective, but on the other side, he was always followed by dark rumors. Investigating the Hong Kong drug trade, Lei Wulong discovered that Fury had connections with drug dealers.

Bryan sneaks into the ‘King of Iron Fist Tournament’, targeting Yoshimitsu, who has strong ties with Boskonovitch.

Tekken 4
Bryan came to the realization that his life was quickly coming to an end. Two years ago, the Mishima Zaibatsu recruited Doctor Abel as its top scientific advisor. When this happened, Abel abandoned Bryan without giving a second thought to the now-obsolete cyborg’s well being.

Bryan knew that the only person capable of extending his life was Abel, his creator. Bryan despised both Heihachi Mishima, the man who took Abel away from him, and Abel himself for abandoning him.

One day, Bryan heard news of The King of Iron Fist Tournament 4, and decided to enter the Tournament. He entered knowing that it would probably be his final fight. As he trained, Bryan sensed that his death was quietly approaching.

Despite his impending death, Bryan’s physical strength did not diminish. On the contrary, Bryan’s muscles flowed with energy that made him more powerful than before. Along with this new strength, Bryan developed an almost uncontrollable rage that also manifested itself in his outward physical appearance.

Bryan staked everything on this one hope – if he won the Tournament, he would become the head of the Mishima Zaibatsu. More importantly, if Bryan defeated Heihachi Mishima in the tournament, he could easily take total control over the Mishima Zaibatsu to do his bidding.

If all went as planned, Bryan would command Abel to modify his body to prolong his life. This would also be an opportunity for him to upgrade his body.

It would be his opportunity to upgrade himself to the most powerful being in existence.

Tekken 5

However, no one expects a sudden act of heroism on his part: he dies trying to save a little boy from a speeding car. When he arrives in the afterlife, he is informed that the child would have miraculously survived, and had it not been for him the child would have one less scratch on his right arm. His act of heroism, therefore, was “completely pointless”. Yusuke’s premature death was unexpected and unnecessary, and the afterlife was not prepared for his arrival.

After numerous tests to gauge his worth, Yusuke is eventually revived, and is assigned to work for the Spirit World as a detective investigating demon cases in the human world. He comes into spiritual abilities of his own, and enlists the help of numerous friends from Reikai (spirit world), Makai (demon world, translated in the English manga as the Demon Plane) and Ningenkai (Human World) to aid him in his cases as they fight off demons and humans seeking to rule over all three worlds. If you like anime you should watch this it’s one of the best anime series i watched.

Subsequent games follow the events of Jin’s ending within Tekken 3. Jin’s “Prologue” cinema in Tekken 4 shows that, after Heihachi’s betrayal, Jin fell into a pit of self-hatred, despising everything related to the Mishimas. Locating a secluded dojo in Brisbane, Australia, he spent two years unlearning the Mishima style he had used up to that point and mastered “traditional” karate thanks to the help of the dojo master. Eventually, the rumors of a King of Iron Fist Tournament 4 began to surface and Jin set his sights on this new tournament.

Within Jin’s Story Mode, before he can make it to the fight with Kazuya in the seventh round, he is surrounded by the Tekken Force, incapacitated, and chained up at Heihachi’s private building in Hon-Maru. Later, Heihachi brings Kazuya to Hon-Maru, and, while Jin is chained, Kazuya attempts to awaken the Devil within Jin. As Jin begins transforming, he attacks and defeats his father. Next, Heihachi attempts to kill Jin and take his power for his own.

Again, based on subsequent Tekken games, Jin’s ending is made the story’s central focus, with Tekken 5′s introduction sequence set only seconds afterward. G Corporation (the rival company to Heihachi’s Mishima Zaibatsu) sends an army of Jack robots to kill Heihachi and Kazuya. The two cooperate briefly, but Kazuya betrays Heihachi. The Jacks self-detonate, destroying the Hon-Maru and apparently killing Heihachi. However, Hon-Maru was the location where Heihachi had sealed his father, Jinpachi Mishima, approximately three decades earlier. Jinpachi is freed when Hon-Maru was destroyed.

Jin’s Story Mode Prologue states that, immediately after leaving Hon-Maru, Jin’s own Devil Gene went berserk. Jin soon found himself awakening inside of an utterly destroyed forest, realizing that he was the cause of the destruction. After returning to Yakushima[12], he is plagued by recurring nightmares and realizes that it’s only a matter of time before the Devil Gene completely takes over. From here, the story shifts to Devil Within.

When Kazuya was a five year old child, he was thrown off of a cliff by his father, who claimed that his son was weak. If Kazuya was to be his father’s successor to the Mishima Zaibatsu throne, he was to not only survive the fall, but climb back up the rocky cliff as well. Kazuya nearly died from the fall, but his survival was assured through a deal with the Devil, who promised him enough power to take his revenge on his father.

It was presumably believed that the demonic power that forms the Devil Gene was introduced in the Mishima family when Kazuya formed the pact with Devil (although Jinpachi Mishima would later acquire a Devil Gene through his own pact with the Devil). This also explains why Jin came in possession of the cursed gene, despite that he never forged any sort of pact with the Devil, for it means that he inherited said gene from Kazuya.

In the years prior to the events of the original Tekken, Kazuya entered martial arts tournaments all over the world, becoming an undefeated champion (only Paul Phoenix ever managed a draw with him.) When the first King of Iron Fist Tournament was announced, Kazuya took the opportunity for vengeance. It is during the tournament that the original game takes place.

before his defeat at the hands of Heihachi, Kazuya became intimate with Jun Kazama, who conceived their son, Jin Kazama.
